SIH Student Nurse Externship

We offer a 3-tiered student nurse extern (SNE) program that provides paid learning opportunities for nursing students. This part-time program is open to all nursing students and provides a variety of experiences to help you grow your nursing knowledge and skills. These positions offer flexible scheduling and hourly pay increases with each tier. A list of skills that can be performed for each tier is available upon request. 

SNE 1 - Apply Now

  • Open to any nursing student with a CNA certificate or has completed the Nursing Fundamentals course
  • SNE 1s are allowed to provide many components of direct patient care independently within their hospital unit of hire
  • Application Dates:
    • Summer Cohort starts May 18, 2026 | Applications open Feb. 23, 2026, interviews begin early April
    • Fall Cohort starts July 6, 2026 | Applications open April 20, 2026, interviews begin earlyJune
    • Spring Cohort starts Dec. 14, 2026 | Applications open Sept. 28, 2026, interviews begin early November

SNE 2 - Apply Now

  • Open to ADN and BSN nursing students within the final year of their program
  • SNE 2s can work in any departments within the SIH hospitals
  • SNE 2s are paired with an experienced nurse preceptor and will be allowed to perform a variety of skills under the preceptor's supervision
  • SNE 2s will continue in this learning position until they seamlessly transition into the new graduate RN resident role once their program is complete and they pass their state licensing exam

SNE 3 - Apply Now

  • Requires an active LPN license
  • Open to ADN and BSN nursing students within the final year of their program
  • SNE 2s can work in any departments within the SIH hospitals
  • SNE 2s are paired with an experienced nurse preceptor and will be allowed to perform a variety of skills under the preceptor's supervision
  • SNE 2s will continue in this learning position until they seamlessly transition into the new graduate RN resident role once their program is complete and they pass their state licensing exam
