Advanced Lung Cancer Detection with Ion® Robotic Technology
SIH is the only health system in the southernmost 16 counties offering Ion® robotic-assisted bronchoscopy for early lung cancer detection. This minimally invasive technology uses shape-sensing capabilities and real-time 3D mapping to navigate to small, hard-to-reach lung nodules with millimeter-level precision.
Ion allows pulmonologists to obtain accurate tissue samples through the airway—supporting safer procedures, same-day discharge for most patients, and a significantly reduced risk of complications.
Early detection saves lives. When lung cancer is found at stage 1, the five-year survival rate is approximately 85 percent. Having this advanced technology available within Southern Illinois means patients can access leading diagnostic care near their families and support systems, without traveling to distant metropolitan centers.
